Welcome to Home-BASE

UB’s Center for Excellence in Home Health and Well-Being through Adaptive Smart Environments (Home-BASE) performs transformative research and educational activities dedicated to home health and wellness in three areas: Environments for Health and Well-Being, Integrated Assistive Technologies, and Home Health Informatics.

environmentsEnvironments for Health and Well-Being: Design of Smart home environments for health and well-being throughout the lifespan.

This area focuses on a combination of sensing, actuation, communication and adaptive structures to improve health monitoring and lifestyle improvement for all populations. We focus on the design of smart, adaptive home environments for health and well-being throughout the lifespan, including how sensing and actuation are combined with home computers, networks and smart devices to promote physical activity and adapt to users.

intergratedIntegrated Assistive Technologies: Design of home environments combining information,
assistive technologies, and adaptive architecture to meet the needs of populations with
limited ability.

This area focuses on the design of home environments combining information, assistive technologies, and adaptive architecture to meet the needs of populations with limited ability. We focus on novel approaches to long-standing communication and activity challenges in home environments in such areas as integration of person lifting aids into the home to enhance safe and efficient transfers, use of coaching software that helps people with memory deficits to remain independent, and application of speech recognition technology to control home security, appliances, heating and cooling, lighting and home entertainment.

homehealthHome Health Informatics: Linking people, caregivers, and health care workers through
personal health records and automated/usable data collection.

This area focuses on linking people, caregivers, and health care workers through personal health records and automated/usable data collection. We  apply our expertise in sensing, health informatics, behaviors, and information fusion to investigate integration of intelligent home environments with health information systems (e.g., applying information fusion for real-time assessment of a person’s health or activity status to populate electronic health records).
